Lynching Photos/Postcards:Without a Sanctuary
Studying these photos has engendered in me the necessity to question people's beliefs in association with their reactions. Though there are many photos that deal with lynchings, one stood out the most. The photo of the six black circus workers, alleged to have assaulted a young white girl. Duluth, Minnesota was the place were three out of the six found guilty (through the tellings of mob leaders) were hanged. When a another investigation took place it was concluded that none of the murdered men could have been involved with the assault. Accordint to the New York times, Human nature is much the same in both sections of the country. Five thousand people approved of these men being hanged because they believed the word of the mob leaders. How can this be O.K.? These killings are nothing more than impulsive racism. This photo tells a lot about the people in Duluth in the 1920s(people in general in agreement with what the NY times quoted) and it stands as a testimony for the hanged as an injustice that was made through a "mistake". Beloved also tells a story of injustice, pain, humiliation. Just as it can been in this photo. I think that the difference of reading about it and viewing in a photo is the emotional impact that it arouses. In the 21st century we should be aware that these things happened to innocent people and we should stop and take a step back and realize that racism is still a issue today.
